I was responsible for producing the entire books’ content—interviewing 75 entrepreneurs, founders, and investors. Beginning in Berlin, I visited countless offices, startup accelerators, and co-working spaces. We would have an hour-long chat, which I supplanted with my own research and turned into short profiles.
After successfully publishing the Berlin guide, I was asked to do the same thing in Stockholm. It's one of my favorite cities, so of course I said yet.
Hundreds of Photos
At the end of each interview, I would take out my camera and snap pictures of the teams. Since the books were produced in wintertime, this often meant making my subjects go out into the blistering cold or standing on rooftops to catch glimpses of the winter sun. I shot offices and co-working spaces, products and even prototypes.
I had a blast taking these portraits and love well the natural lighting in them matches the design of the guides.
Tons of Insight
I went into this project knowing it would involve a lot of writing and photography. What I didn’t expect was how much I learned about the startup scene: I didn’t just meet all these entrepreneurs, I submerged fully in the scene.
Accelerators and seed funding? Learned about that. Why investors look for teams rather than ideas? Know I understand why. Why failure, often fetishized, doesn’t mean true failure? Even wrote about it.
This is one my the works I’m the proudest of—it involved nearly all the services I offer and resulted in a great product that taught me as much as it hopefully teaches the readers.
